The classic “departure” bath at pick-up.

I will have more photos and details about the puppy tomorrow, but I just wanted to say we brought one home!

Also (responding to questions on the previous post), I want to reassure you that Coco’s needs will be met first. After all, the puppy is here to be her companion. (Was not otherwise even remotely thinking about adding a second LGD.) It takes time to “grow up” a companion, so the time to start is now since I have determined the obvious–that Coco must go back to field work full-time, for her own safety. Under no circumstances will Coco be directly exposed to a bouncing pup until she is back on all four feet and strong. There are numerous variables I can’t know at the moment regarding the timing and healing status at which Coco will come home, but whatever those variables add up to when the time comes, Coco will be given time to re-establish her turf before being introduced to the puppy (who is currently in the house). The puppy will be brought to Coco in her kingdom, not the other way around, and it will be an audience with the Queen. Coco has always taken the alpha dog role on the farm, with any dog, and the puppy will be introduced carefully on Coco’s terms, probably for short supervised visits at first while they develop their relationship.

Meanwhile, excuse me, I have a bear cub at my feet. And I think it needs to be on my lap!

I have read many places that one really needs two LGDs to be effective against predators, so I hope Coco and the new cub/pup eventually become a great team. And it is great to have an experienced guardian to show a new pup “the ropes”! Staggering the ages like you are doing sounds perfect. Someday it will be the “pup’s” turn to train in a new team member….

Your bear cub is adorable. Is it a he or a she? Is that the “badger” coloring? So fun to have a baby around. Maybe bear pup and Maude will grow up to be buddies.

We are going to look at some Boer goats tomorrow, the seller is getting older and has decided to move on before the Spring crop of Kids show up. He also has a LGD Pyr that “might” come home with them if FabHub buys the whole herd. That should be interesting! It seems like a good idea to keep the whole family together, minus their buck anyway. My buck Tyson is going to freak and the girls won’t know what to think!

So cute! Your puppy will be much, much happier as a barn dog if he starts out his life there. If he starts out inside he will bond mostly to you and always want to be back in with you. If you really want him to be a LGD he should start out with the animals you want him to guard. Our dog loves our goats, she sleeps curled up with them in their barn at night. She likes us too and will come visit when we are out in the yard but the goats are her main family and she always returns to be with them. If you don’t want a repeat of Coco’s unhappiness out in the barnyard you might want to move the new pup there now. Just something to think about.

That face is adorable. One suggestion on introducing the little one to Coco is if you have a kennel/crate, stick the puppy in there. We did this when introducing our two rescue pups to our husky yrs ago. This way it reduces any amount of biting. We had bandit on a lease at the time so we could pull him back at any time and it allowed us to keep the same amount of distance between them until bandit settled down. He wasn’t happy with the intruders.

he is a cutie!!! I think Coco must be wanting to go back to work after her stay at the vets. Poor girl probably misses you guys and the farm animals. I think a companion would be a good thing for her. And this is a good time while she is away. You have a little time to work with the puppy for a bit and it can get used to you before Coco comes home. Enjoy babies are so much fun and cuddly and soft and warm.

Coco prefers being out with the animals mrberthrong, except for mealtime is all, then sometimes mealtime stretched out too long. I’m confident that they’ll get it worked out just fine.

I’m all giddy, and it’s not even my pyr pup! I think they are the cutest pups ever. Our first pyr was named Bear. Can’t wait to find out more about your new pup.
